MAYS LANDING – Atlantic Cape Community College’s Art Gallery, in collaboration with the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey (BIANJ), is hosting the Neuro Visions: Rewiring Through Art exhibit in the College’s Art Gallery in the William Spangler Library (D Building) on the Mays Landing campus from October 1-29.

This exhibit celebrates the creativity, resilience and strength of brain injury survivors through their art. Participants will share their stories of challenge, healing, hope and transformation.

“This exhibition seeks to raise awareness about the impact of brain injury, foster understanding, reduce stigma, and provide survivors with a meaningful platform to share their stories with the community. BIANJ’s mission is to improve the quality of life for anyone impacted by brain injury by providing support, advocacy, and information, while promoting brain injury prevention,” said Elizabeth Van Roten, director of support services, Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey.

Mary Nghiem, library aide and art gallery coordinator, Atlantic Cape Community College is hopeful to bring about a sense of knowing and feeling by others with this exhibit.

“Through this show, I hope that those who have not experienced disability will develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for people whose lives have been profoundly altered by it. There is something so profoundly human about how we come to appreciate what we have only after we have lost it. This exhibition is rooted in that tension: of the body we once knew and how it learns to navigate the world after injury.

“I find the intersection of neuroscience and the arts deeply compelling, particularly the ways in which complex trauma can alter the brain and the way we process and experience the world. With this exhibition, I want to explore whether art can visually document that journey: life from before the injury, through the acute phase of trauma, and into the months and years of adaptation and transformation.”

An opening reception will be held on October 1, 4 – 5:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery. This exhibit is free and open to the public. The Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
