MAYS LANDING — The New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH) and Journalism + Design at the New School are partnering with Atlantic Cape Community College to create and deliver noncredit Community Reporting and Community Journalism workshops and courses starting February 10.

These workshops and courses will help equip people with the tools to better articulate what is happening in their communities. This year, the College has expanded its offering to include a Community Reporter Workshop as a starting point. Atlantic Cape’s community journalism certificate will help students become an active contributor to local news throughout Atlantic and Cape May counties.

Community Reporting Workshop Series: Join this workshop to get the foundational information you need to become a Community Reporter. Engage with your community by understanding the elements of event and activity reporting. This workshop will introduce you to the skills needed to tell local stories. Apply the skills you learned to produce articles for publication in your local paper, community newsletters, or on social media.

This four-week workshop will cover topics like understanding the basics, credibility and ethics, interviewing and note-taking, and video recording tips. Participants who attend all three sessions are eligible to attend an in-person session to record their “news piece.” You will receive a tripod and Bluetooth microphone set for successful completion. Beginning February 10 to March 6, (Zoom Sessions: 2/10, 2/17 & 2/24; In-person sessions week of March 3.) Your instructor will guide you through the content during the first four weeks of the course, preparing you for the final four weeks, “The Community Newsroom.” During the newsroom portion of the course, you will work with your fellow students and instructor to develop and complete three “news products” that are publication-ready.  Participants who complete the program by producing three “news products” will receive a digital badge, a micro recorder w/case, a reporter’s bag, and reporter’s notebooks.)
