Atlantic Cape’s Three Campuses to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Across September and October

MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College will recognize the distinct history and culture that Hispanic Americans have contributed to America’s diversity by celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sunday, September 15 through Tuesday, October 15 with events at each of the College’s three campuses.

To kick-off the month-long celebration, two Hispanic flag raising ceremonies will be held, one at the Mays Landing campus Quad and the second at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City campus, on Monday, September 16, 12:30 p.m. The Mays Landing campus ceremony, co-sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA) and Los Latinos Unidos student club, will feature live musical entertainment by the Rick Reyes Trio along with light refreshments in the Student Center (G Building).

The SGA will celebrate National Taco Day on Tuesday, October 8 at the Mays Landing and Atlantic City campuses with a “Taco Tuesday” lunch giveaway complete with tasty toppings of choice and one drink per person. Attendees may pick up their first come/first served ticket in G105 in Mays Landing and in the cafeteria in Atlantic City to redeem for their free taco.

The Cape May County campus will host its National Taco Day event on Tuesday, October 15, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria and first floor lobby to wrap up the month-long celebration. The Mullock Family Library, located on the second floor, will host a Hispanic Heritage Information Display complete with artwork, recipes and book selections on Hispanic history, September 23 through October 15.

The Worthington Atlantic City campus will also host a Zumba history and hands-on activity session with Arlin Padilla on Wednesday, October 2 in the cafeteria, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Arlin's Dance Spot will present a historical background on Zumba while also giving those in attendance the opportunity to engage in moves that promote physical enrichment. On Wednesday, October 9, a career panel featuring three Latino professionals will share their personal experiences on how they became who they are today. This event will be held in room 204, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates and recognizes Hispanic American contributions to the United States’ society and culture. It was designated in 1968 when Congress passed Pub. L. 90-498 authorizing and requesting the President to issue an annual proclamation of National Hispanic Heritage during mid-September. The first to do so was President Lyndon B. Johnson when he issued Proclamation 3869 on September 17, 1968.

September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Mexico, which celebrates its independence on September 16th.
