Four culinary students had the right mix of ingredients and ingenuity to impress the judges on Friday, April 22 and take home the title of Iron Student Chef.
The annual event included five teams of students enrolled in the Atlantic Cape Community College Academy of Culinary Arts competing against each other and the 90-minute clock to create three meals using the secret ingredient: bacon.
Guest judges were Chef Pam Green of the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and Chef Kyriakos Georgiou, a 2006 Academy of Culinary Arts graduate and owner of The Local’s Spot in Egg Harbor Township. The judges decided the winners on taste and presentation, and third category of sanitation was judged by instructors.
The winning team was Deovelent Armah, Steven Glassoff, Elizabeth McLenna, and Henry Guzman-Flores.
The quartet made paella, soft tacos and a mousse topped with bacon, and used a variety of unique methods and tools like a torch and dry ice.
The winners of this year’s competition each received a sharpening stone, an apron from Chef Wear, a certificate and their names engraved on the annual trophy.
Family and friends were invited to watch the student chefs cook and joined the certificate presentation afterwards at Careme's.
