Policy No. 513

Institutional Review Board (IRB) Compliance

Adopted: 12/19/17

Reaffirmed: 10/28/25

Revised: 6/23/26

In order to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of all human subjects involved in research activities conducted at the College, the College will ensure such research is conducted in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.  This applies to any such work, whether new, ongoing, or to support proposed funding, and whether conducted at College sites or off-site locations.

In addition to protection of human subjects, the College recognizes the importance of coordinating student and institutional surveys in order to minimize survey fatigue, avoid duplication of institutional research efforts, protect student privacy, and preserve the integrity of institutional assessment, accreditation, strategic planning, and student success initiatives.

Accordingly, all research involving human subjects must be reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human subjects in research prior to such studies being undertaken.

Faculty, staff, students, external researchers, consultants, and affiliated organizations seeking to conduct surveys, interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, or research involving Atlantic Cape students, employees, or institutional data must obtain prior approval through the IRB process before recruitment, distribution, or data collection activities begin.

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Chief Strategy Officer may coordinate, modify, limit, postpone, or deny survey-related research activities when necessary to protect institutional operations, student welfare, data privacy, or the College’s official assessment and survey calendar.
